FAQ’s about Hypnosis:

What are the benefits of hypnosis?
Have you ever tried to change a habit, only to find your subconscious resisting? Hypnosis empowers people to get the subconscious to accept their conscious decisions, especially when hypnotherapy is facilitated by someone who is a competently hypnotherapist. Hypnosis can be helpful in overcoming undesired habits, managing stress, enhancing job performance, improving at sports, increasing self-motivation and self-confidence and reducing anxieties, such as fear of flying.

Does a hypnotized person give up control?
Do we give up control of our minds during a movie? When is the last time you got so involved during a movie or TV show that you actually felt emotion? You were literally in a hypnotic trance, although you retained the power to emerge from that state if desired. A movie, TV show, self-hypnosis tape, or hypnotherapist may guide your mind, but YOU still have the power to resist. Hypnotherapists should start informing people where the real power is - within THEIR OWN MINDS!

How does hypnosis feel?
Since hypnosis is a natural state of mind, clients are often surprised that they hear every word. Unless one enters a deeper state, or at least a medium state, he or she may not "feel" any different than when relaxing in the favorite easy chair with a good book or some beautiful music. One may feel quite mellow, and may feel light (or weightless), or very heavy as if sinking into the chair. The feeling may be euphoric for some who enter a very deep state. The actual hypnotic process itself enhances certain abilities: (a) the ability to IMAGINE, (b) the ability to REMEMBER, (c) the CREATIVE abilities, and (d) RESPONSIVENESS TO SUGGESTIONS.

How do we induce hypnosis?
The technique I use most often is called PROGRESSIVE RELAXATION. This involves progressively relaxing parts of the body, usually while listening to pleasant music. The hypnotic state is easily achieved through this method, although other methods are sometimes employed.

What is the difference between hypnotherapy and hypnosis?
In hypnotherapy, positive suggestions for self-improvement, images or anchors are placed into the subconscious mind by either a hypnotherapist or by the individual in self-hypnotism. This is done while in a hypnotic trance. Hypnosis can be used for a variety of things, including entertainment, as in stage hypnosis.

Is hypnosis dangerous?
Hypnosis is not dangerous. If it were, we would all be in jeopardy every time we get engrossed in a good book, movie, or TV show.

What makes hypnotherapy different than traditional therapy?
Hypnosis is quite different than traditional therapy. Traditional therapy deals with the problem, discusses it, analyzes it, and dissects it. The problem gets a lot of attention. Traditional therapy deals with issues at a cognitive level; and many of life's problems require just that. When someone has to make difficult cognitive decisions, competent professional help is absolutely essential! For example, hypnotherapy is not a substitute for marriage counseling. When it comes to changing habits or behaviors regulated by the subconscious, hypnotherapy shines. Hypnosis is NOT A PANACEA for all life's problems. In hypnotherapy, we just go for the result. We don’t care why you smoke, we just hypnotize you into quitting. We don’t analyze why you’re overweight we just hypnotize you into eating better, drinking more water and exercising more.

What is the success rate with hypnotherapy?
Very good. My smoking programs are hitting 90% with one session. I also have very good success with weight control clients. I like to see the client more than once for some additional reinforcement sessions. I also have group weight control sessions.

Is hypnotherapy covered by insurance?
In New York, hypnotherapy is not currently covered by insurance. Some states are contemplating coverage and some employers pay for smoking cessation programs. Perhaps it's time for the general public to ask their insurance companies to offer coverage for hypnotherapy! There was a time when chiropractic was not available in any insurance plan...yet now there are numerous health plans that include chiropractic. It's time for hypnotherapy to be recognized!
