FAQ’s regarding skin care:

What is combination skin?
Skin that has both dry and oily areas- or a combination of conditions- is called combination skin. The most common is to be dry in the outer cheek areas and oily through the nose, chin and forehead- the “T- Zone”.

Oily skin is a hereditary condition that develops due to over-active sebaceous glands. Dry skin results from, amongst other things, under-active sebaceous glands.

Therefore, your combination skin needs products that help to normalize the functioning of your sebaceous glands, so that their sebum production level is similar over your whole face.

Normalizing (balancing) the skin is the key to healthy, radiant skin. This involves more that simply using astringent cleansers and toners to clear away surface oil in the T-Zone and applying rich moisturizing creams to your dry areas. In fact, this approach will only increase the imbalance.

The more you strip your skin of natural sebum, the more it will produce to compensate. So, instead of solving the problem in your T-Zone… it makes it worse. Likewise, applying rich, heavy creams to dry skin may discourage your sebaceous glands in those areas and reduce sebum production even further.

Facial treatments and a home maintenance regime specifically designed to suit your individual needs will help to avoid over stimulating the sebaceous glands and normalize the production of sebum.

What is the best way to care for combination skin?

What causes Oily Skin?
Oily skin is a hereditary condition that develops due to over-active sebaceous glands.

Oily skin problems can be aggravated by the misuse of skin care products and the tendency to try to reduce oiliness- either through use of harsh soaps or the excessive use of astringents or scrubs. Over-stimulation of the skin through scrubbing or stimulating massage should also be avoided.

Other causes of oily skin can be a diet rich in fats and oils, a hot, humid climate or hormonal imbalances during adolescence, which increase the production of sebum (oil).

Oily skin is more prone to pimples and blemishes but can also be blemish-free. While open pores and excessive shine can be an annoying feature of oily skin, the advantage you have is that your skin does not wrinkle easy- giving you a youthful appearance for many more years than people with dry skin.

Facial treatments and a home maintenance regime specifically designed to suit your individual needs will help to avoid over stimulating the sebaceous glands and normalize the production of sebum.

Normalizing (balancing) the skin is the key to healthy, radiant skin. This involves more that simply using astringent cleansers and toners to clear away surface oil. In fact, the more you strip your skin of natural sebum, the more it will produce to compensate. So, instead of solving the problem… it makes it worse. However if your skin is not cleansed properly, dirt, dead cells, and sebum can clog your pores and create blackheads.

Oily skin, therefore needs special care from cleansing, toning and moisturizing right through to night care and treatments for areas requiring special attention. And, although you may categorize your skin as “Oily or Normal/Oily”, it is in fact unique- and should be nurtured and nourished accordingly.

What defines Normal/Sensitive Skin?
Although your skin enjoys a normal sebum balance and doesn’t normally develop blackheads, pimples or other blemishes you may experience some level of irritation using particular skin care products or under certain environmental, lifestyle or climatic conditions.

This is not the same as skin that is highly sensitive, with resultant rashes and irritations ranging from redness, itching and burning through to the small liquid filled pustules that can occur as a result of very severe sensitivity. If your sensitivity is in this range, you should be using the Jurlique Ultra Sensitive Skin Care Collection, which was specifically developed for this purpose.

Although your skin does not wrinkle as easily as dry skin, you still need to ensure that your skin care regime includes nurturing chemical free cleansers, toners and hydrators and protecting moisturizers to guard against lifestyle and environmental effects and maintain a youthful appearance for as long as possible.

Facial treatments and a home maintenance regime specifically designed to suit your individual needs are essential to maintain and improve your skin condition, strengthening it with pure, natural antioxidants, vitamins and herbal extracts.

What causes Dry Skin?
Dry skin develops as a result of under-active sebaceous glands. This is commonly due to the aging process, as sebaceous glad activity slows down.

Other common causes of dry skin are too much sun, wind, harsh soaps, poor diet insufficient fluid intake, illness and some medications. Therefore, it may be a temporary condition requiring a different skin care regime until returning to its normal condition.

Dry skin tends to be dehydrated. Lack of natural sebum diminishes its ability to retain moisture, since oil in the skin acts as a natural barrier against moisture loss.

When you skin is dry, your pores are almost invisible. Your skin tends to wrinkle easily and superficial lines are prevalent.

Facial treatments and a home maintenance regime specifically designed to suit your individual needs will help stimulate the sebaceous glands and normalize the production of sebum.

Normalizing (balancing) the skin is the key to healthy, radiant skin. This involves more than simply using heavy creams to protect against moisture loss. In fact, using oils or creams that are too heavy for your skin may actually inhibit the production of sebum, making the problem worse.

Dry skin needs special care from cleansing, toning and moisturizing right through to night care and treatments for areas requiring special attention. And, though you may categorize your skin as “Dry or Normal/Dry”, is in fact unique- and should be nurtured and nourished accordingly.

What are clogged pores and blackheads?
Clogged pores appear as tiny skin colored or reddish bumps on the skin. Pores become blocked with dead cells that mix with sebum and forma soft “plug” that blocks the sebum released from the sebaceous glands. This then swells inside the pore duct and creates a small bump on the surface. Your skin feels rough and uneven.

Blackheads are clogged pores that continue to enlarge. The black color is due to pigments darkening when exposed to light (oxidation).

Clogged pores and blackheads are usually associated with oily skin – but may sometimes occur with other skin conditions. Excessive blackheads may occur during times of hormonal changes (i.e. during puberty or later in life). Treatment is the same in all cases.

How can I prevent and treat clogged pores and blackheads?
The first VITAL step in preventing clogged pores and blackheads is Deep Cleansing and Exfoliation. It is important to use a specialized deep cleanser that will absorb toxins and impurities, while it balances your skin’s sebum production and gently exfoliates. Best results are achieved with pre-soaking the pores and impurities to soften them, enhancing the deep cleansing process.

Enhance the benefits of your twice daily deep cleansing and exfoliating regime with a twice-weekly facial steam bath and mask routine. The first step detoxifies as it open and softens the pores – allowing the mask to work it’s best. Use a deep cleansing, purifying mask to activate circulation as it absorbs toxins, waste and excess oils in your skin.

This deep cleansing and purifying regime, followed by a gentle alcohol-free toner and chemical-free hydrating gel is all you need to treat clogged pores and blackheads.

Avoid using facial “scrubs”, harsh cleansers and strong astringent toners – they actually damage your skin and also stimulate excessive sebum production, which is the primary cause of clogged pores and blackheads. It is also important not to squeeze blackheads, as it damages the pores.

Our aestheticians are specially trained to evaluate your skin, make a prescription and teach you how to use the products and begin a successful home skin care program.

What is the best treatment for acne?
Success in treating your acne depends upon correctly identifying the specific type of acne you’re dealing with. There are four different kinds of acne:

• Acne Vulgaris
• Oily Infected Acne
• Inflamed Acne
• Acne Rosacea

At Wellness Springs, we use an exclusive line of skin care products by Jurlique. These pure, natural skin care products can gently and effectively deal with the different causes and symptoms of each type of acne and help you maintain healthier, more radiant skin.

What is Acne Vulgaris?
This condition is recognized by infected pustules, oily skin, blackheads and clogged pores. It is the result of androgen hormones, excessive cellular keratinization, oil production and the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes (P acnes).

Other factors that aggravate this type of acne are:
• Improper skin care
• Hormonal imbalances
• Food allergies and sensitivities
• Lack of vitamins (especially vitamin A)
• Insufficient acidity in the skin
• Climatic conditions (especially heat and humidity)
• Improper diet
• Stress
• Picking at the “spots”

Some of these factors are easily avoided and simply require awareness, willpower and commitment on your part. However, some are more complex and require professional assistance.

For example, many people with Acne Vulgaris are tempted to use harsh chemical antiseptic washes, lotions and creams in the hope that they will make their skin less oily and, therefore, clear up their acne. Unfortunately, the resultant excessive “drying” of the skin, often accompanied by “scrubbing”, actually hardens the skin and stimulates the glands to produce even more sebum (oil), making the condition worse. The secret is to normalize your skin’s sebum production.

That is why it is critical that you have a tailor-made gentle and nurturing skin care routine to meet your own specific needs, instead of using mass-produced products that strip and irritate and either make the original condition worse- or create a new problem. Normalizing (balancing) the skin is the key to healthy radiant skin. The appropriate selection of inner health products (nutritional support) will also help you treat your skin condition from the inside.

What is Oily Infected Acne?
During adolescence, hormonal changes cause an increase in the production of sebum from the sebaceous glands. Dead skin cells mix with oil and form a blockage in the pores. This leads to the formation of a blackhead or, if the pores ruptures, a pustule. This acne occurs on the oily parts of your face, chest and back.

While the basic treatment of Oily Infected Acne is much the same as for Acne Vulgaris, this kind of acne is solely caused by excessive oiliness due to hormonal changes, and treatment is less complex without having to take into account a wide variety of possible causes.

As for Acne Vulgaris, it is important to obtain a personalized Skin Care Prescription tailored to your individual needs- and avoid using strong topical chemical antiseptic washes, lotions, and creams (they may dry out the pimple, but they also leave the surrounding skin dry and irritated). Squeezing your pimples can cause delayed healing and scarring, as the pore becomes damaged.

What is Inflamed Acne?
Unlike the adolescent Oily Infected Acne, the causes of this “adult” acne are internal – your skin is not necessarily oily and pimples are often in non-oily regions of your face. This condition develops in the skin tissues and is related to lymphatic circulation.

Lymph transports cellular wastes and toxins and, when lymph becomes congested along the jaw line and neck, lesions develop. The lesions often start as itchy skin-colored lumps and develop into larger pustules. These lesions are a form of detoxification through the skin, rather than through the internal organs of detoxification and elimination. It is, therefore, essential that you treat Inflamed Acne internally as well as topically. Changing hormone levels (i.e. before menstruation), emotional stress and poor diet all affect this condition.

Your Inflamed Acne is best treated by using calming, soothing creams and mists, regular purifying masks and enhancing your internal detoxification and elimination mechanisms by drinking 8 glasses of water daily, taking Colloidal Minerals, OPC Antioxidant Capsules and other key nutrients.

What is Acne Rosacea?
This condition occurs in adults and has no connection with Acne Vulgaris. It is a chronic inflammatory condition of the facial skin – characterized by redness across the nose, cheeks, chin and forehead, visibly damaged blood vessels and small red inflammatory pustule and thickened lumpy skin texture.

Rosacea develops gradually as mild episodes of facial blushing or flushing which, over time, may lead to a permanent red face.

Rosacea is often caused by digestive disorders – such as constipation and hyperacidity – or by any condition which brings about a persistent flushing of the blood vessels of the face (e.g. menopause, high blood pressure, gastric ulcers, sinus infections or certain drugs). Sometimes a person’s occupation can contribute to the condition (i.e. chefs, laundry workers, etc. whose environments are constantly hot).

Rosacea can be aggravated by coffee, tea, highly seasoned and spicy foods and alcohol.

You should see your health care professional to find the underlined cause of your Acne Rosacea. It’s closely related to (and often mistaken for) Seborrheic Dermatitis. The two conditions often occur together and professional diagnosis is essential to ensure that you are treating the right condition/s.

What causes dehydrated skin?
Dehydration may be a temporary condition, varying from season to season, caused by environmental factors. It may also be caused by excessive perspiration, lack of sufficient sebum to prevent evaporation of natural moisture, poor metabolism and/or insufficient water intake.

Other factors that cause or aggravate dehydration include:
• Atmospheric conditions including too much sun and /or wind
• Not using sun screens and /or daytime protective moisturizers
• Using inappropriate skin care products
• Chlorinated pool water
• Harsh soaps
• Tea, coffee and diuretics
• Smoking
• Some medical conditions (i.e. kidney, diabetes) and medications
• Prolonged hot baths

Oily skin can become dehydrated too. It is very easy for dry skin to become dehydrated – because thin skin has difficulty retaining inner moisture. People with dry skin are very aware of their problem and usually take great care to moisturize and protect their skin against the elements.

What many people do not realize is that oily skin may also become dehydrated for a variety of reasons. And, because people with oily skin use lighter moisturizers and are less concerned with problems associated with moisture loss, they sometimes ignore the early signs of dehydration and don’t take adequate measures to prevent it.

How can I prevent my skin from becoming dehydrated?
Whatever you skin type, it is imperative that you
• Use daytime protective moisturizers and sun screens – moisture protection must provide a film that hold moisture in
• Drink 8 glasses of water daily
• Eliminate or limit your intake of tea and coffee
• Stop or limit smoking
• Avoid harsh soaps and astringents

Special care is essential whenever you are exposed to extreme climatic conditions, such as snow skiing, sailing and or other water sports – or any sport or hobby that involves regular or prolonged exposure to the elements during summer or winter.

If outdoor activities are combined with great physical exertion (i.e. cycling, triathlon, marathon, hiking, etc) the risk of skin dehydration is even greater due to increased perspiration. Remember to increase your fluid intake, re-apply sunscreen regularly and use a hydrating Aroma Mist or Floral Water to keep your skin happy and healthy.

It is also important to supplement a healthy diet with antioxidants, omega-3 fish oils and To guard against damage by the free radicals, which are created during strenuous exercise and also replace vital minerals and trace elements lost through excessive perspiration.

It is possible to enjoy a very active life outdoors and have radiant skin.

How can dehydrated skin be treated?

What is Psoriasis?
A condition that is often hereditary, and can also stem from emotional and environmental contributors, Psoriasis affects more women than men.

Psoriasis can be caused by a wide range of factors and is most often characterized by bright red patches covered by silvery scales. This type of Psoriasis may appear on your elbows, knees, or scalp, the backs of your arms and legs, the palms of your hands and soles of your feet. Stress often causes, or aggravates, acute attacks of Psoriasis.

However, there are six different kinds of Psoriasis – with causes as varied as a streptococcal sore throat, trauma to the epidermis and dermis (such as a surgical scar) and drugs such as Beta-blockers, lithium and anti-malarials. Palmopalntar Pustulosis Psoriasis, which is most common in middle-aged females, seems to be associated with cigarette smoking. Professional diagnosis is essential to ensure appropriate management of your particular condition.

How can psoriasis be treated?
While some of the more serious forms of Psoriasis may require prescription-only medication, there are some simple, natural treatments available to help relieve the distressing symptoms and prevent or reduce outbreaks of the more common forms.

Psoriasis is a complex condition involving body toxins breaking out on the skin. It, therefore, requires both internal and external treatment.

Internally

Externally

Salt is great for both healing and drying out toxins. A combination of Hydrotherapy and body treatments using sea salt and home salt baths – and/or swimming in salt water – is very helpful. Hydrotherapy is also very relaxing, making it ideal to help reduce the stress that is often a key contributor to Psoriasis outbreaks.

Calendula Cream should be applied twice daily to the area to assist with calming the skin to relieve symptoms. Viola Cream has the same effect – however its slightly stronger and better suited to the body than the face.

Regular treatments with Hair and Scalp Revitalizer Balm and using Chamomile Shampoo and Conditioner may be helpful in managing Psoriasis outbreaks on your scalp.

The right blend of pure essential oils, aroma mists, herbal teas, tranquil music and relaxation therapies such as massage, yoga and meditation all help keep stress levels under control – which can have a dramatic effect in the management of Psoriasis.

What is Eczema?
Eczema is a form of Dermatitis. It most commonly appears as an itchy, red rash which may take the form of blotches, blisters or scaling – or a combination of these. As many skin diseases cause similar rashes, it is more important to have it properly diagnosed before it can be treated effectively.

The most common type of eczema in children is atopic eczema (also called atopic dermatitis), which is often associated with asthma or hayfever. It is the result of a hypersensitive immune system directly under the skin and commonly erupts on the face, neck, wrists, ankles and behind the knees. Secondary infection created by scratching the itchy rash is more serious than the rash itself. Fortunately, this type of eczema is readily manageable and usually improves gradually with age, with few continuing to have troublesome eczema into adulthood.

This is essentially a genetic (inherited) disorder – but there are also many external factors that may influence eczema on a day-to-day basis. As children will often show multiple positive reactions in allergy tests, they are generally unhelpful. The pattern of allergic reactions from one child to another is not consistent and may alter as the child gets older. If, however, you notice that your child obviously reacts to certain foods or environmental allergens, avoiding these known irritants will assist with management of the condition. Excluding food groups from a child’s diet should only be done under supervision of a nutritionist, to prevent dietary deficiencies.

Adult eczema takes various forms:
• Seborrhoeic Dermatitis – most often of face, scalp and back
• Discoid eczema – coin-shaped lesions on limbs
• Venous eczema – associated with venous disease – lower legs
• Hand dermatitis – often caused by repeated exposure to irritants
• Asteatotoc eczema – most common on the limbs of the elderly
• Neurodermatitis – caused by a habitual rubbing or scratching
• Lichen striatus – a rare linear eczema in adolescents affecting limbs

How can eczema be treated?
Adult eczema is most often a form of Contact Dermatitis, resulting form contact with common allergens. Elimination and avoidance of known allergens and irritants is useful in managing Adult Eczema – and patch testing often helps identify the trigger. Fortunately, most eczema is fairly simple to manage. It can usually be treated effectively and kept in check using a simple skin care regime that includes emollients, to moisturize and soften the skin (i.e. baths containing bath oil once or twice daily, soap-free shower gels and body washes and a moisturizer applied liberally to areas of dry skin, at least twice daily. This regime will restore the skin’s elasticity and suppleness and help reduce itching and scratching. Emollients are safe and should be used frequently, as first-line treatment, rather than medicinal or steroidal remedies. Over many years, customers have reported finding these Jurlique products helpful in managing their eczema:

• Tranquility Bath Oil
• Chamomile/Rose Aromatic Hydrating Concentrate
• Rose Shower Gel
• Pure Rose Body Oil
• Day Care Face Oil
• Calendula Cream
• Viola Cream
• Baby’s Calming Bath Oil (for infants and young children)
• Baby’s Soothing Cream (for infants)

What is Pigmentation?
Pigmentation problems result from an uneven distribution of melanin over the skin surface.

What are the usual causes of Pigmentation?
• Pigment accumulation - resulting in “age spots”
• Uneven melanin production as a result of hormonal imbalances resulting from pregnancy, birth control pills or menopause
• Surface irritation of the skin such as acne conditions
• Excessive sun exposure

Skin pigmentation must not be mistaken for melanomas or other malignant skin conditions (e.g. warts). Observe changes in pigmentation and consult a qualified practitioner for diagnosis.

How can pigmentation be treated?
In addition for the products chosen to suit your skin condition, you need to apply:

• Elder Cream – twice daily to the affected areas
• Sun Cream SPF 30 + and/or Sun Lotion 30 +, before any sun exposure
• Regular facials which incorporate the specialized pigmentation treatment
• Protect your skin from the sun whenever possible, by wearing a hat, long sleeves, high collar, etc.

What is Couperose?
Couperose is temporary or chronic redness appearing on your face. It appears as small dilated red blood vessels on your cheeks, around your nose and sometimes on your chin – and occurs primarily as a result of poor elasticity of the capillary wall.

When the capillary wall is not sufficiently elastic, it may not contract back to its original size after expanding with increased blood flow caused by blushing, excessive heat or other stimuli. The result is a distended capillary holding blood within its structure, giving the appearance of diffuse or local redness.

How can couperose skin best be treated?
• Using calming, soothing creams, strengthening surface capillaries, protecting your skin from sun damage
• Avoiding activities, situations and products that aggravate the condition, such as…

- Excessively hot or cold water
- Saunas and very hot climates
- Eating hot, spicy foods
- Alcohol
- Retin A preparations
- Facial bleaching
- Hydroquinone
- Harsh exfoliants
- Topical acne treatments containing benzyl peroxide
