Need support to manage stress better?

As a wellness center, Wellness Springs is uniquely poised to address stress relief with several disciplines. These are not necessarily exclusive and often work best used in conjunction with each other.

::  Acupuncture

The nervous system has two distinct branches; the sympathetic (fight and flight) and the para-sympathetic (rest and digest). Think of it as the yin and yang of the nervous system. When we are having a yang reaction, we are in fight and flight mode. Respiration increases, digestion decreases. All functions not necessary to out run danger, stop. When we are stressed, our yang or fight and flight switch is flipped. Asthma, constipation , IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and insomnia are all indications of a excessive yang reaction to stress.

Acupuncture helps to balance this by activating the yin or rest and digest aspect of our  nervous system. By quieting adrenal function and bringing a mindful awareness to our breath, we can sooth asthmatic response with deep slow breathing. We can improve digestion and insomnia by mindfully distinguishing between real and perceived danger. Acupuncture encourages low and slow breathing, relaxes muscles and soothes the nervous system. It allows your body to restore balance and gives you tools to manage it on your own.

:: Chiropractic & Rehabilitation

Stress effects the body in very predicable ways – muscle tension across the base of the skull, shoulders and low back which leads to  tension headaches, muscle aches and fatigue.  Chiropractic care helps take away the tension and restores a sense of ease and balance.  The active care approach at Wellness Springs also includes exercise that help to relax and release chronic tension.  Patients are taught many self care techniques to help reduce the effect of stress on a daily basis.

By addressing ergonomics and proper body mechanics, we can reduce stress caused by faulty movement patterns.  Bringing awareness to poor posture while sitting at a computer, while driving or poor patterns of lifting and bending gives the patient an opportunity to stop the cycle of repetitive strain that contributes to their chronic tension.   It is empowering to the patient and cost-effective.

:: The importance of relaxed breathing

Up to 90 % of all patients under stress and in pain breath incorrectly.  Learning to breath from low in the abdomen allows the entire nervous system to function optimally.  During your Chiropractic treatment, we will teach you how to breath in a way that reduces tension and allows you to feel centered and relaxed.   For many chronic pain patients, faulty breathing is too often overlooked and never properly addressed.   Normalizing breathing is foundational in our active care program and an important  step in having a relaxed and pain free body and mind.

:: Hypnotherapy

What makes you feel stressed? Is it work? Family situations? Financial problems? There are many sources of stress in our modern lives.  Often times stress can be useful.  If you are being chased by a bear, the stress reaction is appropriate.  It pumps adrenaline into your blood stream and helps you run faster.  Today however, stress is more often destructive, rather than helpful.  Many of us are in situations where we are subjected to stressful circumstances that we are unable to change.  Continued stress increases the risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, allergies and hampers the body’s ability to fight infection and heal wounds.(Sci. Amer. Aug 15, 2008.)

Hypnosis can significantly reduce or eliminate stress.  Hypnosis is a powerful methodology that  trains your mind to be more relaxed and to interpret events in your life in a manner that reduces stress.  In addition, the state of mind that you experience during hypnosis is similar to the state of mind of meditation.  This “state of mind”  has many benefits including reducing cortisol and creating a general sense of well being.

The stress reduction program offered at Wellness Springs includes 2 hypnosis sessions.  The first session is about 2 hours in length.  It starts with an explaination of how hypnosis works.  Then an individualized hypnosis session is personalized to meet your needs and goals.   During this hypnosis session your mind is trained to be more relaxed and happier.   Afew days later, in your second session, you are taught self hypnosis.   The hypnosis session that follows is in the format of self hypnosis.  This session is recorded and you will receive a CD or a MP3.   This recording is a valuable tool that you can use to reinforce the work done during your first two sessions.
